Baseball Overpowered at Cincinnati

The Cincinnati bats totaled three home runs and three Bearcat hitters recorded multi-RBI performances as Cincinnati defeated Canisius in a run-rule shortened game, 12-1, Sunday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at UC Baseball Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The win, which allowed Cincinnati to sweep the four-game weekend series, improved the Bearcats to 10-6 on the year. The Golden Griffins remain winless, falling to 0-10.

Cincinnati starter Joel Pineiro is credited with the win after 4.0 innings of two-hit ball, one earned run and a walk. Pineiro's two allowed hits were the only for the Griffs in the contest, as Brendon Oliver entered to pitch in the fifth for the Bearcats and ended up earning the save after retiring all nine batters he faced, which included five strikeouts. Canisius graduate student Levi Abbott took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits to go with seven strikeouts.

Freshman catcher Ryan Jones recorded one of Canisius' two hits on the day and scored the lone run for the Blue and Gold in the third inning. Jones opened the third inning with a single through the left side of the infield, and was moved to second after junior Owen Silliman drew a walk. Jones reached third base safely thanks to a sac-bunt from sophomore Justin Bremner and then scored on an RBI-groundout off the bat of freshman Bennett Cox.

Jones' run for Canisius cut the Cincinnati lead in half after the Bearcats took a 2-0 lead in the home-half of the first inning. Jack Natili drove in the Bearcats' first run with an RBI-single and the Griffs conceded a run for an out on a fielder's choice.

Cincinnati added to its lead with single runs in the third and fourth to make the score 4-1, and then broke the game open with three runs in the sixth. Bearcats Sophomore Cal Sefcik's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh enacted the run-rule and ended the game.
