Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Falls at Bentley in Game One of AHA Quarterfinals

Jake Black scored two goals and Connor Hasley stopped all 26 shots he faced to pace No. 3 seed Bentley to a 4-0 victory over No. 6 seed Canisius in game one of their Atlantic Hockey America Postseason Tournament quarterfinal round series Friday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Nik Armstrong-Kingkade and Nick Bochen also scored for the Falcons (19-14-2), who took the lead in the best-of-three series with their victory on Friday. Hasley turned aside all 26 shots he faced, including a game-high 11 shots from the Golden Griffins (12-22-2) in the third period, to record his NCAA-leading ninth shutout of the season.

Freshman Ben Bonisteel finished with 27 stops between the pipes for Canisius.

Armstrong-Kingkade opened the scoring less than four minutes into the contest, deflecting Tanner Main's point shot past Bonisteel to give the Falcons the early lead.

Bochen doubled the Bentley lead with 15 seconds to play in the opening frame, firing a wrist shot past the blocker of Bonisteel from the right point to make it a 2-0 contest.

Black made it a 3-0 game at the 5:15 mark of the second when he snuck a wrist shot past the left side of Bonisteel from the bottom of the right face-off circle.

Black closed out the scoring with 6:28 elapsed in the third period when he tapped home a rebound for his second goal of the contest.

HEAD COACH TREVOR LARGE'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"It was a tough game and a tough loss, but the postseason gives us an opportunity to forget about these things quickly. Overall, Bentley was more competitive in some areas that we're going to need to remedy. I expect us to be much better in those areas tomorrow night. It's a feeling that's similar to what it was a couple weeks ago, when we lost here Friday night and didn't feel good about the effort and were able to respond the next night. So, when your backs against the wall in the playoffs, those things are going to be required. We'll lick our wounds and get ready for game two tomorrow.

"There were some scoring chances that we had that we need to convert on. We need to finish some plays and we need to create more and keep the puck out of our net. We were trying to find some space in some certain areas. What we're doing offensively, we need to be better through the neutral zone to be able to hopefully generate more pucks that get in and allow us to find some space and get after them on the line rush. We're going to need to do some things to get that space and get more momentum. But obviously, once we get in zone, I liked some of the things that we did in terms of creating some space, but we must attack. We were a little bit too perimeter-based tonight in some moments. We're going to need to be able to get inside Bentley a lot more and earn some second-chance opportunities.

GAME NOTES
• Bentley outshot Canisius by a 31-26 margin for the contest as it held the edge in shots on goal in all three periods.
• The Griffs were 0-for-2 on the power play while the Falcons did not have an opportunity with the man advantage.
• Canisius was held to two goals or fewer for the 18th time this season and moved to 1-17-0 when that occurs.
• Graduate defenseman Jackson Decker tied Ben Danford (2010-14) for the program's Division I era mark for career games played as he appeared in his 158th career contest for the Griffs on Friday.
• Junior Robert Kincaid and freshman Dominic Payne led the Griffs with three blocked shots each.
• Graduate student Cole Kodsi and freshman Luke Marshall were tied for the team lead with four shots on goal each.
