Softball Sees Win Streak End at Mount St. Mary's

A pair of Canisius throwing errors in the bottom of the first inning helped Mount St. Mary's to score three times, and Mountaineers' reliever Ellie Meier got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth, as the host Mount defeated the Golden Griffins 4-3 in MAAC softball action Sunday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field in Emmitsburg, Md.

The win moved Mount St. Mary's to 7-22 overall and 2-6 in league action, while Canisius, which saw its six-game win streak come to an end with the loss, fell to 12-13 overall and 2-1 in conference games.

Mount St. Mary's senior Brianna Manni knocked in the first run of the game with a base hit back up the middle that allowed Gina Del Giorno to score from second base. On that play, Kelsie Bandelow was able to advance from first to third on a throwing error, giving Mount runners on the corners with one out. After Manni stole second base, Tyra Christian drove in a run with a base knock to left, and Manni came in to score on the Griffs' second throwing error of the inning.

Mount held a 3-0 lead until the top-half of the fourth, when junior Bailey Alatorre drove in Canisius' first run of the game with an RBI-double to left that pushed senior Emily Ilano across the plate. Canisius trimmed Mount St. Mary's lead to 3-2 in the fifth thanks to an RBI ground-out off the bat of freshman Vivi Vargas. Sophomore Rebecca Hai scored on Vargas' ground-out after she started that frame with a leadoff triple to right. In the home-half of the fifth, Mount got that run back to push its lead to 4-2 lead after Laurenne Gallagher lined a base hit back up the middle to score De Giorno from second base.

Canisius started the top of the sixth off with back-to-back hits to cut Mount's lead to 4-3. Ilano got the inning started with a base hit, and she then scored from first on an RBI-double of the bat of Allatorre. Pinch hitter Cara Edwards followed Alatorre's double with a single to center and then Hai walked to load the bases with no one out. That is when Mount St. Mary's elected to bring in Meier in relief, and the freshman promptly ended the Blue and Gold's rally with two ground ball outs and a strikeout. Meier earned her first career save by retiring the Griffs in order in the seventh to close out the game.

Canisius racked up nine hits in the loss, with Alatorre going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and sophomore Ella Johel adding two hits as well. Senior Alyssa Cloutier drew three walks in the losing effort and stole a base. Canisius starter Mikaila Obenrader took the loss in the circle after she allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in 2.0 innings of work.

Del Giorno went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base to help lead the Mount to its first win over Canisius since the school joined the MAAC prior to the 2022-23 academic year. Sophia Schmehl improved to 3-7 in the circle for the Mountaineers after she gave up two runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
