Softball Extends Win Streak to Six with Sweep of Mount St. Mary’s

The Canisius softball team extended its win streak to six straight with a pair road wins over Mount St. Mary's in MAAC action at Our Lady of the Meadows Field in Emmitsburg, Md., Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Griffins (12-12, 2-0 MAAC) took the first game 6-2 and then scored a win in the second game of the doubleheader by defeating the Mountaineers (6-22, 1-6 MAAC) by the score of 10-0 in five innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
An RBI-triple off the bat of sophomore Ella Johel in the top-half of the first got the Griffs on the board first with a 1-0 lead in the opening game of Canisius' first conference game of the season. Mount St. Mary's knotted the game up at 1-1 in the home-half of the first, however, after Kelsie Bandelow raced home from third base on a passed ball with two outs in the frame.

Canisius took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, and then the Blue and Gold tacked on two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. In the fourth, senior Rosie Gomez led off the inning with a walk, and she was lifted for pinch-runner Rebecca Hai. Hai would score moments later thanks to a two-run homer by senior Emily Ilano, her third homer of the season, that put Canisius up 3-1. In the fifth, Mount St. Mary's starter Sophia Schmehl retired the first two batters she faced before freshman Tabitha von Kolen singled to left. Johel followed von Kolen by drawing a two-out walk, and then Hai pushed both Canisius runners across the plate when she reached on a fielding error in left. Canisius added an insurance run in the sixth thanks to an RBI-double off the bat of junior Natalie Quonce, who knocked in fellow junior Bailey Alatorre, who started the inning off with a double to left field.

The six runs were more than enough support for game one starter, Olivia Manchester, who earned her eighth win of the season after she allowed two runs on five hits to go with six strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Von Kolen and Alatorre each had a pair of hits in the win for Canisius, with von Kolen scoring twice and adding two stolen bases.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the second game, Canisius sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring six times, en route to the 10-0 mercy-rule victory in five innings. With one out in that inning, Alatorre drove in Ilano with an RBI-double, and the Griffs took a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI-single off the bat of freshman Vivi Vargas. After senior Alyssa Cloutier drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 3-0 in favor of the visiting team, von Kolen drove in a pair of runs with a single through the left side of the drawn-in Mount St. Mary's infield to give the Griffs a 5-0 advantage. Johel capped the inning's scoring with an RBI ground out for her 23rd run batted in on the year.

Alatorre led off the third with her team-leading sixth homer of the season to give Canisius a 7-0 lead and the Griffs scored three more times in the fifth off relief pitcher Olivia Murphy to force the game's early end. Canisius starting pitcher Toria Kover was the recipient of the Griffs' 10-run outburst, as she posted her first win of the season in the circle after holding Mount scoreless on five hits to go with eight strikeouts in five innings of work.

Canisius banged out 13 hits in the game two victory, and five different Griffs recorded multi-hit efforts in the game. Of those 13 hits, seven of them were for two bases, as Johel and Ilano each recorded a pair of doubles for the Blue and Gold.

GAME NOTES

• Four of Canisius' six wins in this current winning streak have come via the mercy-rule.
• Canisius has recorded 10-or more hits in four of the team's six games during this current win streak.
