Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Cruises Past Mount St. Mary’s for Fifth League Win

Senior midfielder Jaxon Fridge dished out a game-high four assists to pace Canisius in a 12-6 victory at Mount St. Mary's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.

Fridge highlighted a balanced Golden Griffins (5-8, 5-1 MAAC) lineup that saw eight different players register a goal as Canisius remained in a tie with Sacred Heart for first place in the league standings. Senior Kayden Easter and sophomore Jordan Reed finished with two goals and an assist each while sophomore Mason Wolford and freshman Peter Biglin both chipped in a pair of tallies.

Senior goalie Tommy Kunz stopped eight shots as he and the Canisius defense allowed a season-low six goals against. Junior face-off specialist Micah Hanson went 11-of-19 at the "X."

Brody Atkinson notched two goals and added an assist for The Mount (2-9, 0-5 MAAC). Jack Smith added a goal and an assist while Bennett Wright tallied nine saves between the pipes for the home team.

Canisius never trailed in the contest, scoring four of the first five goals of the game to hold a 4-1 lead late in the first quarter.

The Mount notched the next two goals to pull within one early in the second, but the Griffs answered back with four unanswered goals over a 3:13 stretch during the later stages of the second quarter as they built an 8-3 cushion with just over three minutes to play in the opening frame.

Trailing 8-4 at the start of the second half, Mount St. Mary's once again looked to get back into the contest as it tallied two of the first three goals of the third quarter to cut the deficit to three, 9-6, with more than five minutes to play in the frame

Canisius kept The Mount from getting any closer, however, notching the final three goals of the contest while it held Mount St. Mary's off the scoreboard over the final 20-plus minutes of the game to secure the win.

HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Today definitely was a team win. In all facets in the game we did what we needed to do to get the win: getting to double digits on offense, holding them to single digits on the defensive end and a pretty strong game at the face-off 'X' from Micah (Hanson) and the rope unit.

"The guys are coming together offensively and continuing to gel as they leave their egos at the door when it comes to who's scoring and who's getting the assist as they understand that it doesn't matter. There's a lot of hidden plays that are going on out there, and they're all important. All that matters is what we have on the scoreboard at the end of the game.

"Defensively we just did a really good job of executing the game plan today. When we look at the film, we'll see where we need to be a little bit better on a few little things. But the communication and just the overall execution throughout that unit was amazing today.
