Late Surge Pushes Merrimack Past Baseball

A five-run seventh inning, highlighted by home runs in three consecutive at-bats, allowed Merrimack to power past Canisius, 9-5, Sunday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at the Warrior Baseball Diamond in North Andover, Mass.

Merrimack improved to 5-13-1 overall with the win and moved to 4-2 in conference play. The Golden Griffins slid to 2-12 on the season with a 1-2 MAAC record after losing their first conference series.

Senior Tyler Greenleaf was charged with the loss for Canisius after giving up three runs during the Merrimack seventh inning outburst. Dawson Logie collected the win after a 0.2 inning relief appearance in the seventh.

Senior Trent Rumley went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs scored to lead the Griffs lineup. Redshirt sophomores Ronan Glassford (2-for-5) and Thomas Zwirecki (2-for-4) both tallied two hits and an RBI on the day. Graduate student Levi Abbott got the start for Canisius, going 5.0 innings while allowing three runs, four hits and striking out four.

For Merrimack, Cavan Brady and Logan Castellano both went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Brady, along with Frankie Ferrentino and Matt DeShiro, accounted for the three home runs in consecutive at-bats during the seventh inning.

The Warriors struck first in the home half of the second inning, taking an early 3-0 lead. Jayden Hamilton drove in a run on a ground out after Christian Scanlon opened the inning with a double and Harry Painter added a two-run homer to close out the inning.

Canisius responded in similar fashion during the top of the third as junior Owen Silliman opened the scoring with a walk, a steal of second and was brought home by a single from Glassford. Rumley tied the game in the next at bat with a two-run shot, his second of the campaign. In the fifth, Rumley scored again after reaching on a hit-by-pitch and being batted around the bases by a double from Zwirecki to put the Griffs up one, 4-3.

Merrimack tied the game again in the sixth, loading the base and getting Brady home with an RBI groundout. The Warriors landed the decisive blow in the seventh, opening the inning with an RBI single from Brooks Craigue and hitting three straight home runs to increase their lead to 9-4. Junior Andrew Marcello scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to trim the deficit to four, but it was not enough to spark a rally for the Griffs.
