Men’s Lacrosse Beats Merrimack to Remain Undefeated in MAAC Play

Sophomore Jordan Reed tallied four goals to lead Canisius to a 10-9 victory over Merrimack in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Senior TJ Buono finished with a goal and two assists while sophomore Mason Wolford pitched in two goals for the Golden Griffins (2-7, 2-0 MAAC), who remained undefeated in league play. Freshman Peter Biglin dished out two assists and junior Ashton Burian notched his first career goal on a buzzer-beater to end the third quarter in what proved to be the game winner.

John Savino finished with two goals and four assists for the Warriors (1-6, 0-2 MAAC). Brian Bouwman (1g, 2a) and Casey Herod (2g, 1a) tallied three points each while Anthony Kulturides finished with 12 saves between the pipes.

Holding a 4-0 lead after the first quarter, Merrimack got on the board to open the second quarter scoring before Canisius used tallies from Wolford and Reed to build a 6-1 cushion.

The Warriors answered back, rattling off four straight goals during a nearly five-minute stretch to pull within one, 6-5, with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. Wolford and Reed teamed up once again for a pair of goals just before the break to give the Griffs an 8-5 advantage at the break.

Merrimack notched the first two goals of the second half to pull within one, 8-7, with less than two minutes to play in the third quarter.

Canisius regained its two-goal cushion before the end of the frame, as junior Devin Collins struck with 39 seconds remaining before Burian hurled a shot from deep in the Canisius end of the field that deflected off the stick of Kulturides and into the Merrmick cage as time expired to put the Griffs up three, 10-7.
The Warriors did not go away, posting a pair of goals to start the fourth-quarter scoring to once again make it a one-goal game, 10-9. Canisius and senior goalie Tommy Kunz kept Merrimack from netting the equalizer, limiting the Warriors to just one shot on goal and three turnovers in its last five possessions to secure the one-goal victory.
