Early Deficit Dooms Baseball in Series Opener at Merrimack

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Andrew Heffernen scattered three hits and one run over 8.1 innings of work to pace Merrimack to an 8-1 win over Canisius Friday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at Warriors Baseball Diamond in North Andover, Mass.

With the win, Merrimack improved to 3-1 in league action and 4-12-1 overall. Making their league debut, the Golden Griffins fell to 1-11 overall as they started conference with an 0-1 ledger.

Heffernen struck out six as he kept the Griffs off the scoreboard until the ninth inning to pick up his first win of the season. Harry Painter (1-for-4) and Christian Scanlon (1-for-2) both recorded two RBI for the Warriors while Brooks Craigue and Cavan Brady combined for five runs scored.

Senior Peyton Consigli is saddled with the loss for Canisius, giving up three runs in the opening inning before setting in to finish with six strike outs in 6.0 innings of work. Sophomore JC Spinosa was the lone source of offense for Canisius, going 1-for-3 with a ninth inning solo home run. Freshman Bennett Cox and redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford both went 1-for-4 on the day.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the first inning as Brady doubled into the gap to bring home the first run of the contest before  Painter belted a two-run homer to put the Warriors in front, 3-0. Consigli was able to settle in after the opening frame, holding the Warriors scoreless for his next five innings.

Canisius went to their bullpen in the seventh inning and Merrimack was able to take advantage, loading the bases with no outs. A Frankie Ferrentino sac fly and Christian Scanlon's two-run single brought home three more runs, increasing the warrior lead to 6-0. In the eighth, Brooks Craigue accounted for two more runs, hitting an RBI double before scoring on a wild pitch.

Down 8-0 in the ninth, Heffernen returned to the mound to complete the shutout but was spoiled by Spinosa, who connected on a solo home run. Michael Bradshaw took over for the Warriors on the mound and retired the last two batters to secure the win for the Warriors.
