Men’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker to Little Three Rival St. Bonaventure

Patrick Shanahan scored with one second to play in the fourth quarter to break a 6-6 tie and lift St. Bonaventure to a 7-6 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Conor Murphy recorded a hat trick to highlight a balanced Bonnies (5-4) attack that saw four other players record a goal. Anthony Cimino pitched in two assists while Jaxon Dillon notched a goal and an assist. Isaac Farmer finished with nine saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Sophomore Jordan Reed posted his first career hat trick for the Golden Griffins (1-7). Freshman Peter Biglin notched his first collegiate goal and added an assist for a two-point outing. Senior goal Tommy Kunz recorded 12 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Shanahan's game-winning goal came just 11 seconds after senior Patrick Mitchell tied the game at 6-6 with his first goal of the contest.

After winning the ensuing faceoff, the Bonnies raced up field before Blayze Becker feed an unmarked Shanahan, who stepped into a shot from 10 yards out that beat Kunz to the right side to give the Bonnies the victory.

St. Bonaventure trailed 5-1 midway through the third quarter before a man-up goal from Murphy at the 5:01 mark of the frame ignited a five-goal spurt lasted more than 16 minutes and gave the Bonnies their first lead of the game, 6-5, with 3:41 on the clock.

St. Bonaventure maintained the one-goal cushion until Mitchell struck for the equalizer in the final minute, setting the stage for Shanahan's buzzer-beater.
