Men’s Lacrosse Stymied in Non-Conference Matchup at Cleveland State

Justin Dalum recorded 14 saves to pace Cleveland State in an 11-8 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at Krenzler Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
 
Will Adair and Xander Johnson tallied two goals each for the Vikings (2-3) while Amiri Austin and Alex Van Voorhis pitched in a goal and an assist each. Robbie Stewart won 11-of-18 draws and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls.  
 
Senior Jaxon Fridge posted a hat trick and added an assist while sophomore Jordan Reed tallied two goals for the Golden Griffins (0-6). Redshirt senior Mikey Howe, senior Patrick Mitchell and junior Devin Collins accounted for the other three Canisius goals.
 
Senior Tommy Kunz finished with 15 saves between the pipes. Junior Micah Hanson went 10-for-22 at the face-off "X" with six ground balls.  
 
Trailing 1-0 after Fridge opened the scoring at the 7:40 mark of the first quarter, CSU rattled off four unanswered goals over a more than 10-minute span to grab a 4-1 lead early in the second.
 
The teams exchanged single tallies through the remainder of the first half, giving the Vikings a 7-4 lead at the break.
 
Reed opened the second half scoring to pull the Griffs within two, only to see CSU record the next four goals to take their largest lead of the contest, 11-5, with 9:02 to play in regulation.
 
Canisius tallied the final three goals of the game, highlighted by a pair of tallies from Fridge to complete his hat trick, to determine the three-goal margin.
 
GAME NOTES
• Cleveland State outshot Canisus by a 39-33 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 14-9 advantage during the first quarter.
• The Griffs were 1-for-4 in man-up opportunites while the Vikings were 0-for-1 with the extra attacker.
• Canisius was 12-of-19 on clear attempts while Cleveland State was a perfect 22-for-22 on its clears.
• Fridge posted the first hat trick of his career as he also established a career high with his four-point performance on Saturday.
• Sophomore Mason Wolford dished out multiple assists for the first time in his career as he finished with two helpers on Saturday.
• Hanson moved within seven face-off wins of passing Daniel Balawejder (2017-20) for first place on the program's career face-off wins chart (452).
• Kunz recorded double-digit saves in a game for the fifth time this season with his 15-save performance on Saturday.
• Reed tallied multiple goals in a game for the first time in his career with his two-goal performance on Saturday.

Canisius begins Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play March 8 with an 11 a.m. contest against defending regular season and tournament champion Sacred Heart at the Demske Sports Complex.
