Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Hobart in Season Opener Saturday

Hobart used an 11-2 run during the middle stages of the contest to pull away from Canisius on its way to a 21-12 victory in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Poole Sports Complex in Geneva, N.Y.

In the season-opening contest for both programs, Alex Rosa scored five goals to pace a potent Statesmen attack also saw Will Delano (four goals) and Connor DiTomasso (three) finish with hat tricks. Cole Emmanuel (12-of-18) and Mike Valent (7-of-11) were a combined 19-of-29 at the faceoff X while Jackson Faiola finished with seven saves in goal.

Senior TJ Buono recorded a hat trick to pace the Golden Griffins. Sophomore Mason Wolford finished with two goals and an assist while redshirt junior Lance Williams added a pair of tallies. Junior Micah Hanson finished with 11 face-off wins and added a game-high eight ground balls. Senior Tommy Kunz notched 10 saves between the pipes for the Griffs.

With the score tied at 6-6 in the final minute of the first half, Hobart used tallies 22 seconds apart from Delano and Dino to grab an 8-6 advantage heading into the break.

The Statesmen carried their momentum into the third, outscoring the Griffs by a 9-2 margin during the frame to build a 17-8 cushion. Rosa led the way for Hobart during the frame, recording three goals while Delano chipped in a pair of tallies to complete his hat trick.

The teams both scored four goals during the fourth quarter as the Statesmen secured the season-opening victory.

Earlier in the contest, Hobart raced out to a 3-1 lead midway through the first quarter before Canisius used a pair of tallies from Williams and single strike from Buono to pull in front, 4-3.

The teams proceeded to exchange goals over the next 15-plus minutes of action, setting the stage for Hobart's game-changing run that began during the final minute of the opening frame.

HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Our initial focus was to start strong and coming out of the first quarter tied was a good sign.

"The second quarter was solid until the two goals allowed in the last minute before the half, coupled with the penalty that started us man down in the third, which put us in a hole that we didn't recover from.

"Our energy and effort were great throughout, and guys were selling out to make plays. Next is matching that effort with some better on-field decisions in key moments."
