Bellarmine Surges Past Men’s Lacrosse with Strong Second Half

Bellarmine outscored Canisius by an 8-2 margin in the second half to erase a one-goal deficit and post a 13-8 victory in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

John Alie notched four goals while Justin Wescoat finished with three goals and an assist for the Knights (2-2). Joe Alie chipped in a pair of goals while Michael Blaymires finished with three points on two goals and an assist. Nolan Hudnut made 10 saves between the pipes for Bellarmine.

Sophomore Mason Wolford recorded a hat trick for the Golden Griffins (0-2). Freshman Carson Christy finished with a goal and two assists while sophomore Jordan Reed tallied two assists. Senior Tommy Kunz matched his career high with 16 saves while junior Micah Hanson went 14-for-25 at the "X" with seven ground balls.

Playing in snowy conditions, Bellarmine trailed 6-5 at the start of the second half before a pair of goals from Wescoat and a marker from John Alie over the opening nine minutes of the third quarter gave the Knights an 8-6 lead.

Christy started the second half ledger for the Griffs with 3:01 to play in the third to make it a one-goal game, only to see Bellarmine strike for four straight goals, highlighted by a trio of tallies from John and Joe Alie, to stretch the Knights cushion to 12-7 with just under 14 minutes to play in the fourth.

The teams traded a single goal each way over the remainder of the contest, allowing Bellarmine to secure the five-goal victory.

Earlier in the contest, the Knights held a 2-1 edge before redshirt freshman Ben McGrath struck for his first collegiate goal to spark a 4-1 run that staked the Griffs to a 5-3 lead. The teams exchanged goals before Wescoat capped the first-half scoring with his first goal of the game with 1:13 to play before the break, setting the stage for Bellarmine's second-half surge.
