Women’s Basketball Drops MAAC Contest to Quinnipiac

Gal Raviv scored a game-high 19 points and Karson Martin tallied 18 as Quinnipiac recorded a 56-41 victory over Canisius Thursday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Bobcats improved to 10-2 in MAAC play and 18-3 overall with the win while the Golden Griffins fell to 4-7 in league action and 5-16 on the season.

Martin scored 15 of her 18 points in the first half on 7-for-10 shooting, allowing the Bobcats to establish a nine-point lead heading into the break. Anna Foley also notched 10 points for the Bobcats while recording a team-high eight rebounds. Quinnipiac shot 35.5 percent from the floor for the contest as they were held to their second worst shooting and scoring performance of the season. The Griffs also limited the second best three-point shooting team in the conference to a season-low 15 percent from distance.

Canisius was paced by sophomore Shariah Gailes, who collected a game-high 11 rebounds and scored eight points in a starting role. Graduate student Jalea Johnson contributed nine points while junior Franka Wittenberg played a facilitator role, dishing out a game-high five assists and grabbing five boards. Despite the excellent defense, Canisius shot 29.5 percent from the floor and gave up 20 points on 22 turnovers.  

Leading 15-11 after the first quarter, Quinnipiac stretched its lead to nine points at the half with a 12-5 run in the opening minutes of the second quarter. The Griffs cut the deficit to six points with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter but were stifled by a 8-1 run from the Bobcats, allowing them to seal the game in the fourth with a ball-control offense.

GAME NOTES
• Thursday was the 23rd meeting between Canisius and Quinnpiac. The Bobcats lead the all-time series 21-2 and snapped a two-game winning streak by the Griffs.
• All 11 active Canisius players saw playing time, with the Canisius bench outscoring Quinnipiac's reserves by a 12-3 margin. 
• Out of 21 games this season, head coach Tiffany Swoffard has used 10-or-more players in rotation 20 times.
• Canisius out-rebounded the Bobcats, 38-34, their seventh game in its past eight where it has finished with more boards than its opponent.
• The Griffs shot 83.3 percent from the charity stripe, their seventh game this season shooting more than 80 percent from the free-throw line.
• Gailes picked up her sixth double-figure rebound game of the season with Thursday's performance.
