Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

St. Bonaventure Surges Past Men’s Basketball

Six St. Bonaventure players scored in double figures, and the host Bonnies grabbed 20 offensive rebounds as a team en route to an 89-70 victory over Canisius in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday evening at the Reilly Center in Olean, N.Y.

St. Bonaventure forward Frank Mitchell recorded a double-double with a game-high 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds, eight of which came off the offensive backboard. Freshman Achille Lonati came off the bench to score 13 points, while Josephy Grahovac, Darryl Simmons II and Cayden Charles all chipped in 12 points to the winning cause. Andrew Osasuyi posted 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots as the Bonnies ended the contest shooting 48.5 percent from the field, with nine of their 33 made field goals coming from 3-point land.

For Canisius, junior Bryan Ndjonga scored a team-high 18 points to go with seven boards and a pair of blocks in the loss for the Griffs, while freshman Javante Edwards came off the bench to score 14 points. Fellow freshman Chris Kumu added 12 points as the Blue and Gold shot 49.0 percent from the field, made 8-of-19 tries from behind the arc and knocked down 12-of-17 chances from the charity stripe.

Canisius came out of the gates hot, scoring the game's first five points, with Ndjonga accounting for four of those on a pair of made field goals in the game's opening 1:35. Trailing 8-7 with 16:15 left in the opening half, Kumu got the Griffs back in front with a two-handed slam off a backdoor feed from graduate student Myles Wilmoth, and the Blue and Gold stretched its cushion to three at 11-8 on the next trip down the floor thanks to a driving bucket by junior Mike Evbagharu with 15:28 showing on the game clock.

That Canisius lead would be short-lived, however, as the Bonnies used a 7-0 run over the next 1:01 to regain the lead at 15-11. St. Bonaventure never gave up the lead in the game from that point, outscoring the Griffs 35-24 for the final 14:09 of the opening stanza, taking a 50-35 advantage into the locker room at intermission.

With 13:43 left in the contest, Kumu made a pair of free throws, two of his five makes from the line on the day, to trim St. Bonaventure's lead to 60-49. That would be as close as the Blue and Gold would get the rest of the way, as the Bonnies scored the game's next four points in the span of 41 seconds to stretch their hold to 15 points at 64-49 with 12:35 remaining in the ball game.

Canisius junior Kahlil Singleton scored nine points on the power of three makes from 3-point land in the losing effort for the Griffs, while Evbagharu was good for eight points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists. The Bonnies ended the game by outscoring Canisius 22-6 in second-chance points, and the home team posted 16 fastbreak points against just one fastbreak point for the Griffs.
