Volleyball Served Five-Set Defeat by Quinnipiac to Conclude Regular Season

Elena Giacomini put down a match-high 24 kills to spark Quinnipiac to a 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-13) reverse-sweep victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Bobcats finished the regular season at 19-11 (16-2 MAAC), landing in the second seed for the 2025 MAAC Volleyball Championship with Fairfield's win over Iona this afternoon.

The Golden Griffins concluded the regular season with a mark of 11-17 (9-9 MAAC) and hold the five seed that they clinched last night.

Quinnipiac's comeback was aided by 18 kills from Leilani-kai Giusta and 46 assists from Damla Gunes. Carola Negron Diaz registered a team-high 19 digs in the victory.

For Canisius, freshman Madi Cowan recorded a team-best 18 kills on 47 swings to hit at a .277-clip. Senior Bella Mosquera tied her career-high for the fourth time with nine blocks. Senior Ella Bourque dished out a match-high 49 assists while teammate junior Brenda Reynaga registered a match-best 25 digs.

Canisius claimed eight of the first 10 points in the contest, prompting an early timeout from the Quinnipiac side. After a brief Bobcat surge, the Griffs continued to build their lead on the way to a 25-23 win.

The Griffs continued to pour it on in the second set, using a 5-1 run to end the frame and take a 2-0 edge with a 25-19 set victory.

Quinnipiac took advantage of a 13-3 run to start the third set and claim a 25-17 victory before the Bobcats were able to force a fifth set after posting a 25-20 triumph in the fourth frame. 

Canisius led the deciding set, 8-6, at the media timeout. Quinnipiac battled back out of the break, recording four of the next six points gave the visiting Bobcats an 11-10 advantage. After Canisius answered back to tie the contest at 13-13, two consecutive points from Quinnipiac gave the Bobcats a 15-13 victory and the match.

MATCH NOTES
• Saturday was the 31st meeting between Canisius and Quinnipiac. The Griffs lead the all-time series with a 17-14 record.
• Cowan put down 18 kills for the second consecutive match, her highest back-to-back total in her career.
• Friday was the Griffs' 11th five-set match this season. Canisius is 5-6 in those contests and leads the MAAC in five-set matches played.
• Junior Hannah Kos recorded a career-high 19 digs in Saturday's season-finale.
• Nine out of the 10 Golden Griffins who entered the game posted a positive hitting percentage. 
• Canisius honored its three seniors on the 2025 roster: Kalia Reisma, Bella Mosquera and Ella Bourque.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius has earned the No. 5 seed for the 2025 MAAC Volleyball Championship and will square off against No. 4 seed Niagara in an opening-round match Tuesday at the Gallagher Center in Lewiston, N.Y. Start time for the match has not yet been determined.
