Men's Soccer Picks Up Win Over Merrimack on Senior Day

Junior Mason Petrucci assisted on both Canisius goals as the Griffs secured a 2-1 victory over Merrimack in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference collegiate men's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Senior Glodie Mata recorded his first goal of the season to secure the win for the Golden Griffins (5-9-1, 3-6-0 MAAC), as sophomore Gianni Angaran opened the scoring for the Griffs. Graduate goalkeeper Dom Dominguez got the start in net and made two saves.

Salvatore Zani accounted for the lone goal for the Warriors (4-8-3, 2-5-2 MAAC). Nelton Semedo started in goal for Merrimack, making two saves.

The Griffs struck first in the 11th minute as the shot from Petrucci was saved by Semedo, but the rebound bounded to the foot of Angaran, who slotted the ball in the net to put Canisius up 1-0.

Canisius tacked on a second goal in the 78th minute after Petrucci found an unmarked Mata at the top of the box with a pass, which Mata slotted into the top right corner of the frame to give home team the 2-0 lead.

Merrimack cut the Griffs' lead in half at 2-1 26 seconds later after a Canisius defender was whistled for a foul in the box. Zani converted on the penalty kick for his second goal of the season to end the day's scoring.

Merrimack ended the day with a 13-11 advantage in shots, but the Griffs were credited with four shots on goal against the Warriors' three. Merrimack also held a 5-3 advantage in corner-kick chances.
