Volleyball Drops Road Match at Quinnipiac

Box Score Elena Giacomini put down a match-high 32 kills to power Quinnipiac to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23) victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) volleyball action Friday evening at Burt Kahn Court in Hamden, Conn.

Damla Gunes aided Giacomini with 43 assists to pace the Bobcat offense. Yagmur Gunes chipped in 13 kills and three aces to the winning cause for Quinnipiac.

For Canisius, senior Bella Mosquera recorded a team-high 13 kills, while senior Ella Bourque dished out 34 assists. Sophomore Emma Isroff was good for 11 kills and teammate Olivia Van Kooten was credited with three service aces and nine digs.

The Griffs won the opening set after jumping out to a 20-14 lead. Quinnipiac battled back with a 7-2 run in the later stages of the set, but back-to-back kills from Mosquera and Julia Lenik pushed the Griffs to set point. After Quinnipiac scored to make it 24-22, Mosquera helped the Griffs seal the victory and take a 1-0 lead in the match with a kill, her fourth kill in the opening frame.

Quinnipiac evened up the match with a 25-19 second-set win, followed by another 25-19 victory in the third frame to take the 2-1 lead in the match. In those two sets, Giacomini was credited with 14 kills for the Bobcats.

In the fourth set, Canisius trailed 23-21 before Mosquera put down a kill and then followed that with an ace to even the score at 23-23. However, that would be as close as the Griffs would come for the remainder of the evening, as Quinnipiac scored the set's next two points to seal the match victory.
