Men's Soccer Falls to Siena

Lucas Almeida recorded four assists to lift Siena to a 4-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
Eric Svensson and Mark Cajamarca each scored in the first half for the Saints (4-4-1, 3-0-0 MAAC) while Campbell Stalker and Martin Piedeleu struck in the second half to determine the final margin of victory. Bennet Glinder got the start in net for Siena and made two saves to record his second clean sheet of the season.
 
Senior Preston Harold recorded one save in goal for the Golden Griffins (3-5-1, 1-2-0 MAAC).
 
Siena opened the scoring in the 11th minute as the header from Almeida hit the crossbar and found a wide-open Svensson to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
 
The Saints doubled their advantage in the 18th minute as Almeida found an open Cajamarca in the box, who slotted it home to make it a 2-0 contest.
 
Siena closed out the scoring with a pair of tallies early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Almeida danced through a pair of defenders before slipping the ball to Stalker, who put the Saints up 3-0.
 
Piedeleu added to the Saints lead in the 51st minute, slotting the ball into an open net after Almeida beat a pair of defenders on the right save to seal the 4–0 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
• Wednesday's matchup marked the 38th all-time meeting between the two schools, with the Saints now leading the series by a 23-10-5 margin.
• Canisius and Siena were even in shots taken in the match, with 12 shots each.
• Canisius led the way with six corners taken in the match.
• Freshman Noah Baumslag led all players with five shots, with two of those being on target.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius returns to action Oct. 4 as it travels to St. Peter's for a MAAC contest. Opening kickoff between the Griffs and the Peacocks is set for 3 p.m. at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.
