Women’s Basketball Drops Game to Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart's Ny'ceara Pryor and Amelia Wood each scored 19 points to help lead their team to a 70-63 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Pioneers improved to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in MAAC play on the season with the victory, while the Golden Griffins fell to 1-12 and 0-3 in league action.

Canisius graduate student Jaela Johnson scored a team-high 16 points in the losing effort for the Blue and Gold, while sophomore Mary Copple posted a career-high 14 points, highlighted by a 4-for-7 shooting performance from beyond the arc. Senior Sara Carvajal Caro also recorded a career-high with 12 points after shooting 6-for-7 from the floor.

As a team, Canisius shot 46.0 percent from the field and made 7-of-17 tries from behind the arc, but could not surmount the eight-point lead established by Sacred Heart in the first quarter.

After taking an early 9-7 lead, the Griffs were outscored 11-0 to close out the opening frame. This deficit proved to be the deciding factor of the game, as the Griffs outscored Sacred Heart 54-52 for the remainder of the contest.

Canisius worked to climb back into the game in the final seconds of the third quarter, as Carvajal Caro hit back-to-back lay-ups to cut the Sacred Heart cushion to 46-42 with 51 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Entering the final period, the Griffs trailed by six points, but got within four points thanks to a long-range jumper from junior Mariam Sanogo. The two teams would trade baskets before Sacred Heart outscored Canisius 15-11 run to seal the victory.
