Women’s Basketball Takes Road Loss to Marist

A flurry of five three-pointers in the third quarter highlighted a 20-6 run that allowed Marist to pull away in a 67-48 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Saturday at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Red Foxes claimed their fourth consecutive win as they improved to 6-3 in conference play and 11-8 on the season. The Golden Griffins fell to 3-6 in the MAAC and 4-15 overall.

Morgan Lee posted a game-high 18 points and added nine rebounds to pace the Marist attack. Danielle Williamsen recorded 11 points in the win, highlighted by a game-high four assists. The Red Foxes shot 46.3 percent from the floor, made 10-of-23 shots from beyond the 3-point line and went a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.

sophomore forward Shariah Gailes led Canisius with 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench as she went a perfect 7-for-7 at the free-throw line. Graduate student Jaela Johnson chipped in 10 points to post her her sixth double-digit scoring game in her last seven outings. Freshman Yasmine Djibril and sophomore Mary Copple each scored six points in a losing effort. 

Marist took a 26-16 lead into the locker room at halftime after holding the Griffs to eight points in each of the first two quarters. In the opening moments of the second half, the Red Foxes ballooned their lead out to 19 points with a trio of made 3-pointers. 

With a 61-35 lead at the 6:54 mark of the fourth quarter, Canisius began to press the Red Foxes in the back court, leading to a 13-6 run to end the game and cut the final deficit to 19 at the end of regulation.

Overall, the Griffs shot a season-low 25.9 percent from the field, went 16-for-20 from the stripe in the game, and shot 25.0 percent from beyond the arc.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's game marked the 63rd meeting between the two programs, and Marist now holds a 44-19 lead over Canisius in the all-time series.
• The Griffs shot a season-low 25.9 percent from the floor.
• The team's 16 free-throw makes marked the third time this season where the team made more than 15 shots from the charity stripe. With today's performance, Canisius has shot above 80.0 percent from the free-throw line in five games this season.
• In the past four games, Johnson and Gailes have scored in double-figures three times each.
• Senior Sara Carvajal Caro led the team in assists with a career-high two assists in the contest.

UP NEXT
The Griffs return to Western New York on Thursday, making the short trip up to Lewiston, N.Y., to face longtime rival Niagara in a conference clash. The Battle of the Bridge contest is set for a 6 p.m. tip and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
