Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Marist Takes Care of Men’s Basketball

Marist guard Josh Pascarelli scored a game-high 15 points and the visiting Red Foxes shot 52.8 percent from the floor for the game en route to a 70-47 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The win improved Marist to 15-3 overall and 8-1 in league play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 2-18 overall and 2-7 in conference games.

Pascarelli scored eight of his 15 points in the game's second half, where the Red Foxes pulled away from Canisius after shooting 53.6 percent from the field, with six of their 15 second-half baskets coming from 3-point land. Jackson Price added nine points to the winning effort, while Elijah Lewis was good for eight points and a game-high seven rebounds. Marist's defense, ranked second in the MAAC in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, held the Griffs to 47 points after the Blue and Gold shot 29.8 percent (17-for-57) from the floor and 33.3 percent (7-for-21) from 3-point land.

Canisius junior Paul McMillan IV led the Griffs with a team-high 13 points in the losing cause, extending his streak of scoring in double figures to 20-straight games. Redshirt-sophomore Cam Palesse added 12 points, while senior Tana Kopa chipped in 10 points. Sophomores Anthony Benard and Dylan Godfrey each had five points and four rebounds for the Griffs, and Benard led the squad with three of the team's four assists on the day.

Leading 30-27 at the halftime break, Marist stretched its lead to seven at 35-28 in the opening moments of the second half after the Red Foxes scored five of the first six points coming out of the intermission. With 14:13 left in the contest, Marist drove its lead to 10 points at 40-30 after reserve guard Martin Kawa banged down a 3-pointer in transition off a pass from Pascarelli, forcing a Canisius timeout. Out of that timeout, Palesse and Kopa hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to cut Marist's cushion to four at 40-36, but the Red Foxes punched back and took control of the game for good moments later thanks to a 14-4 run over the contest's next 4:36, a run that was capped by a 3-pointer off the hand of Pascarelli.

HEAD COACH JIM CHRISTIAN'S POSTGAME COMMENTS

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 61st all-time meeting between Canisius and Marist. The Griffs lead the all-time series, 35-26, but the Red Foxes have won five straight in the series, dating back to 2020-21.
• Seventeen of the Griffs' 47 points came off 14 Marist turnovers. Canisius turned the ball over just seven times in the game.
• Saturday's game featured four ties and nine lead changes, all in the game's first 20 minutes of play.
• McMillan IV is the first Canisius player to score 10-or more points in 20-straight games since former Griff Takal Molson scored in double-figures in 23-straight contests from the end of 2017-18 campaign through the first 19 games of the 2018-19 season.
• Kopa extended his streak of making multiple 3-point field goals in a game to seven games with his pair of makes from behind the arc.
