Women's Basketball Falls to Fairfield

A 34-point, six-rebound, five-assist performance by Meghan Andersen powered a dominant Fairfield attack to a 97-51 victory over Canisius Saturday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the win, the Stags improved to a perfect 7-0 in conference play and 13-3 overall as they claimed their 30th consecutive win in MAAC play back to last season. The Golden Griffins fell to 3-14 on the season and 2-5 in league play.

Leading the Griffs was sophomore Shariah Gailes, who posted her third double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Gailes went 4-for-5 from the field and 8-for-11 from the charity stripe. Freshman Yasmine Djibril also tallied double digits for the Griffs, netting 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.

Overall, the Blue and Gold shot just 30.9 percent from the field (15-for-49), 18.8 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (18-for-27).

Canisius hung with the defending champion Stags in the first half, facing a deficit of 47-37 at the break. Gailes' aggressiveness in the paint allowed her to draw fouls and collect offensive rebounds, culminating in 16 first-half points and seven rebounds.

The halftime adjustments by the Stags proved effective as they outscored the Griffs by a 31-5 margin in the third quarter and held Gailes scoreless in the second half. The offensive momentum continued into the final quarter as Fairfield outscored Canisius, 19-9, to close out the game.

Andersen posted a career-high scoring effort with her 34 points, which also marked the highest scoring individual performance by any MAAC player this season. Overall, the Stags 55.6 percent from the floor, 45.5 percent from three-point land and 57.1 percent from the free-throw line.
