Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Drops Home Game to Saint Peter’s

Saint Peter's scored 10 of the game's first 11 points and never looked back, as the visiting Peacocks scored a 62-49 win over Canisius Sunday afternoon in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The win ended Saint Peter's two-game losing skid and improved the Peacocks to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 1-15 overall and 1-4 in league action.

Four Canisius players recorded double-figures in the loss, led by senior Tana Kopa, who had a team-high 12 points on the power of four makes from 3-point land. Graduate student Jasman Sangha and junior Paul McMillan IV recorded 11 points in the losing cause for the Blue and Gold, while sophomore Dylan Godfrey added 10 points and six rebounds. For the game, Canisius shot 34.0 percent from the field, made 5-of-18 shots from 3-point land and hit on 10-of-15 tosses from the free-throw line, while posting just nine assists on 17-made field goals.

For Saint Peter's, Marcus Randolph scored a game-high 19 points in the win to lead three Peacocks in double-figure scoring on the day. Bryce Eaton chipped in 11 points, Mouhamed Sow was good for 10 points and Jaquel Morris posted six points and a game-high 12 rebounds, as Saint Peter's ended the day out-rebounding the Griffs by a 44-23 clip. Saint Peter's shot 42.0 percent from the floor in the victory, with 10 of the team's 21 made field goals coming from behind the 3-point arc.

Randolph scored six of Saint Peter's first 10 points in the opening 4:04 of the ball game to put the visiting team up 10-1. Canisius battled back and got within three points at 17-14 midway through the opening half, but Saint Peter's extended its cushion with a 7-0 run over the game's next 2:24 to take a 24-14 lead with 6:56 remaining before the halftime break. That 7-0 scoring spurt was capped by a 3-point field goal by Randolph, one of his four makes from long range on the day.

Trailing by a dozen at halftime, Canisius scored five-straight points to open the second half and cut the Peacocks' lead to seven with 19:01 left to play. Saint Peter's led 43-32 with 13:05 left on the clock before the Griffs scored six-straight points in the span of 29 seconds to trim that lead to 43-38 with 11:03 left in the game. That would end up being as close as the Blue and Gold would get, however, as Saint Peter's answered with 3-point makes on back-to-back possessions to drive the lead back to 11 at 49-38 with 10:02 left to play.

A pair of free-throw makes by Godfrey with 5:09 left in the ball game again put the Griffs down eight at 53-45, by Saint Peter's ended any Canisius hopes of a comeback on its next possession, as Morris grabbed one of his game-high 12 boards off the offensive glass and scored on a put-back to put the visiting team up 55-45 with 3:45 remaining.
