Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Rolls Past VMI

Senior Ely Sidibe and sophomore Edson Flores each notched a goal as Canisius cruised to a 2-0 victory over VMI Friday in men's collegiate soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins moved to 2-3 in their non-conference schedule after defeating Central Connecticut State and VMI in the same week. VMI slid to a 2-2 record in the early season.

"It's a really nice feeling to win again but we've been saying this within the group for years now, we can't get too high, we can't get too low," Canisius head coach Michael Tanke said. "The one thing that I'm most proud of is that the team is the star. We've got seven goal scorers already this season. More if you count our exhibitions and scrimmages. Different guys are assisting on goals and the defending has been just as much of a collective effort."

The Griffs opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as senior Dylan Rice sent a ball into the Keydet box for senior Kodie Sarkodie. Sarkodie headed the cross to an awaiting Sidibe, who tapped the ball past VMI keeper Zach Murphy to give Canisius the early lead.

Senior goalkeeper Jack Petrie recorded another clean sheet for the Griffs, making four saves in the contest. The Griffs keeper was bolstered by a back line of Sarkodie, sophomore AJ Zarcone and sophomore Kevin Villacorta, all of whom played outstanding defense for more than 80 minutes.

Canisius' second goal came from Flores who received a pass at the top of the box from junior Josh Miller. Flores dribbled around a handful of Keydet defenders to deliver a strike in the 60th minute, putting the final score at 2-0.
