Men’s Soccer Battles Back to Earn Tie Against Saint Francis (Pa.)

An 85th minute set piece goal from sophomore AJ Zarcone allowed Canisius to overcome a one score deficit and earn the 3-3 draw against Saint Francis (Pa.) Saturday in men's collegiate soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The tie marks the first of the season for both teams as both the Golden Griffins and the Red Flash come away with a 2-3-1 record.

The two programs matched each other step-for-step in the first half. Each team ended the half with nine shots, five shots on target, and two goals apiece. Senior goalkeeper Jack Petrie and Red Flash netminder Milo Risenhoover each ended the period with three saves. Petrie added two saves in the second half for a game total of five.

The Griffs were the first to break the deadlock as senior Ely Sidibe drew a penalty kick in the 21st minute. Sophomore Mason Petrucci was called upon to take the penalty and delivered a strike to put the Griffs up one goal.

The Red Flash answered in the 38th minute with Joschi Schelb tying the game at 1-all. The Griffs retook the lead in the 40th minute as junior Michael Switala collected a ricochet at the top of the box and deflected a ball off a Red Flash defender to sneak the ball past the keeper.

Saint Francis continued the burst of scoring to end the first half in the 42nd minute as Rodrigo Mendes equalized the score at two goals apiece.

In the second half, the Red Flash were the first to strike, taking the lead in the 69th minute with a goal from Fabian Wagner.

Petrucci made his presence known again as the Griffs looked to equalize in the final moments of the match. He delivered a curling pass off a corner kick that found the head of Zarcone and tied the game at 3-all.
