Zaucha, Hubert Lead Canisius to Victory over Marist

Senior Kara Zaucha led the way with 16 kills as Canisius defeated Marist, 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 25-13), in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Sunday at the Koessler Athletic Center.

After dropping the opening set, the Golden Griffins rallied to sweep the next three sets as it improved to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Red Foxes, meanwhile, slipped to 0-12 overall and 0-2 in league action with the setback. 
 
Zaucha posted her 26th career double-double as she added 10 digs, four blocks and three service aces to match-high 16 kills. Sophomore Lauren Hubert aided Zaucha with 15 kills while senior Jillian Hanna notched a team-high 16 digs. Junior Bella Mosquera joined in on the action with a team-high nine total blocks in Sunday's victory. 
 
Sara Dasic notched a team-high 14 kills to pace the Marist lineup. Taylor Miller pitched in 13 kills while Jamison White dished out 37 assists. Cecilia Potter-Pessoa registered 15 digs and Dasic added in 10 to complete her double-double. 

GAME RECAP
Marist escaped with a narrow 26-24 victory in the first set. The Red Foxes jumped in front with an 8-1 run to take a 13-9 lead midway through the opening frame. The Griffs fought back to level the set at 21-21 before Marist ended the set on a 5-1 run.
 
The Griffs notched five service aces in the second set to record a 25-22 victory and even the match at 1-1. The largest lead in the set for Canisius came when graduate student Sofia Hedqvist recorded one of her six kills on the day to grow the margin to 23-18.
 
Canisius jumped out in front in the third set when the home side exploded on a 7-1 run growing the lead to 13-7, forcing a Marist timeout. The teams traded points before Mosquera recorded a kill to close out the set as the Griffs won, 25-19, and took a 2-1 match lead.
 
The Griffs cruised to victory in the fourth set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead early in the frame as Marist burned both of their timeouts in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Zaucha opened up a double-digit lead with her 14th kill of the afternoon as the Griffs led 19-9. Hubert closed the door, notching her 15th kill of the match as the Griffs rolled to a 25-13 victory and the match.
 
GAME NOTES
• Sunday marked the 47th all-time meeting between Canisius and Marist in volleyball in a series that dates back to 1993.
• The last time Canisius started MAAC play with a 2-0 record was 2021. The Griffs have started MAAC played at 2-0 in four of the last six seasons. 
• Zaucha's double-double effort was her sixth of the season.
• Bourque's 47 assists on Sunday marked the ninth time this season where she has recorded 20-or-more assists in a match.
Tom Hanna notched his third win as a coach over his alma mater with Sunday's victory.

Canisius squares off against Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara Wednesday in a 6 p.m. match at the Gallagher Center in Lewiston, N.Y. The match will air live on ESPN+.
