A pair of second-half goals just 36 seconds apart from junior Skylar Cornell and senior Madeline Weltin led Canisius to a 2-0 victory over Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.
The Golden Griffins improved to 7-1-1 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 4-0-0 with their sixth straight victory. The Broncs, meanwhile, fell to 1-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in MAAC play.
Canisius had multiple chances in the first half, highlighted by a header from junior Meghan Heath that found the crossbar in the 13th minute, but could not beat Broncs goaltender Ellie Sciancalepore.
Rider's one shot of the contest came in the 25th minute off the foot of Ava DeGeorge, but Griffs Goaltender Jordan Spencer was able to corral it.
Canisius took the lead just 6:57 into the second half when Cornell headed home a pass from junior Jessica Whitaker. The Griffs doubled their lead just 36 seconds later, when Weltin put a header past Sciancalepore on a pass from senior Erin Weir.
The two-goal outburst would be all all the support that Spencer and the Canisius needed, keeping the Broncs from registering a shot on goal in the second half to earn the Griffs their seventh victory of the season.
