A pair of second half goals from senior Madeline Weltin led Canisius to a 3-1 victory over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Joseph J Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.
The Golden Griffins improved to 6-1-1 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 3-0-0 with their fifth-straight victory. The Peacocks, meanwhile, fell to 3-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in MAAC play.
The Griffs had multiple chances in the first half, led by three shots on goal from junior Skylar Cornell, but could not beat Peacock goaltender Annabelle Adams.Â
Saint Peter's took a 1-0 lead into the intermission after Madison Telmer took a pass from teammate Stella Accettola in the final seconds of the opening frame and put the ball into the net past Canisius goalkeeper Jordan Spencer.
Canisius knotted the game at 1-1 just 5:25 into the second half on Weltin's first goal of the game. Weltin evened the contest after she played a header off a corner kick from senior Erin Weir for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Weltin and Weir combined to give the Blue and Gold the 2-1 lead in the game's 80th minute. The goal, Weltin's sixth of the season, made her the third Canisius player to score five-or more goals in a single season since the 2018 campaign.
Cornell, who had six goals a season ago for Canisius, capped the day's scoring in the 87th minute after she weaved her way around multiple defenders before beating Adams in the top right corner of the frame.
Spencer made four saves in the contest for Canisius for her sixth victory of the season.Â
