Men’s Soccer Blanks Central Connecticut State

Junior Michael Switala scored twice in the final five minutes of regulation to cement a 3-0 victory for Canisius over Central Connecticut State in intercollegiate men's soccer action Monday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.

The Golden Griffins collected their first victory of their 2024 campaign to improve their record to 1-3-0. The Blue Devils, slipped to an 0-3-0 ledger with the setback.

In a rematch of last season's Labor Day game between the two programs, the Griffs got out to a fast start as graduate student Luke Szablewski opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 18th minute by intercepting a pass to the CCSU keeper and burying a 30 yard shot.

The Griffs out shot the Blue Devils, 6-3, in the first half, highlighted by three shots on target.

The team carried the momentum to the second half of play, recording nine more shots, highlighted by six attmepts on goal. The effort paid off in the 86th minute, when senior Dylan Rice made a move around two CCSU defenders and delivered a perfect cross for Switala for the finish.

Switala notched his second of the contest moments later, collecting passes from junior Glodie Mata and sophomore Aberto Reyes before delivering a strike into the Blue Devils' goal from outside the box in the 88th minute to seal the 3-0 win for Canisius.

Griffs senior goalkeeper Jack Petrie made three saves in the contest to earn the shutout.
