Men’s Soccer Drops Match to Syracuse

Syracuse netted three goals in the first half of the match to earn the 5-1 victory over Canisius Tuesday evening in collegiate men's soccer action at SU Soccer Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y. 

With the win, the Orange improved their record to 3-2-2 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to 2-4-1.

Syracuse opened the scoring third minute as Gabe Threadgold received a pass that snuck through Griffs' backline before burying the shot.

Up 1-0, the Orange continued to pressure Canisius, scoring a pair of goals before the end of the opening half, as Andre Cultler-DeJesus and Daniel Burko scored in the 16th and 38th minutes, respectively.

After a goal by the Orange's Nathan Scott made the score 4-0 in the 54th minute, the Griffs got on the scoreboard with a goal from Kevin Villacorta in the 56th minute. Villacorta was set up with a quality backheel-pass from graduate Luke Szablewski to sophomore Edson Flores, who delivered a perfect cross to the head of Villacorta for his first career goal.


 
Despite the burst of momentum for the Griffs, Canisius unable to mount a comeback, as the Orange capped the night's scoring on a penalty kick goal in the 89th minute.

Game Notes:
•Villacorta recorded a career-high two shots on goal in the contest as well.
•Senior goalkeeper Jack Petrie made a season-high nine saves in the losing cause
•Graduate student Riley Wagner made his first appearance and start of the season for the Blue and Gold
•Wagner, senior Kodie Sarkodie, sophomore AJ Zarcone and junior Kyle Pollard appeared in the full 90 minutes of action

Up Next:
The Griffs will open MAAC play on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Riverdale, N.Y., to take on Manhattan at 1 p.m.
