Volleyball Falls to Youngstown State in Four Sets

Youngstown State's Teagan Ng led the way with a match-high 14 kills to lead the visiting Penguins to a 3-1 win over the Canisius volleyball team in non-conference action Thursday evening at the Koessler Athletic Center on the first day of the 2024 Ellicott Hotels Western New York Invitational. The Penguins won the contest by set scores of 23-25, 25-19, 25-17 and 25-20.

Abbie Householder and Kiyah Franklin added 13 and 12 kills, respectively to the Youngstown State attack, as the Penguins moved to 3-4 on the year with the victory. The loss ended the Golden Griffins' two-match win streak and moved the team to 4-3 on the season.

Graduate student Sofia Hedqvist posted a team-high 10 kills for the Griffs, who hit .103 as a team for the contest. She also added eight digs and three blocks assists to her final stat line. Senior Kara Zaucha was good for nine kills, nine digs and two service aces, while sophomore Lauren Hubert chipped in eight kills and 11 digs. Senior libero Jillian Hanna ended the night with a team-high 19 digs in the losing effort.

Canisius took an early 1-0 lead in the match after the Blue and Gold scored a 25-23 victory in set one. With the first frame tied at 23-23, the Griffs scored the victory thanks to a kill by Hubert and an ace on set-point from junior Ella Bourque, one of Canisius' five services aces on the night.

In the second set, Youngstown State jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and never looked back, scoring the 25-19 victory to even the match at 1-1. In the second frame, the Penguins recorded five service aces, with Householder accounting for four of those, while the Griffs hit just .037 as a team. In the third set, which the Penguins won 25-17, Youngstown State turned a 5-5 tie into a 17-6 lead midway through the frame thanks to a 12-1 run, a run that was fueled by five attack errors by the Griffs.

Trailing 20-16 late in the fourth set, Canisius rallied with three-straight points to trim the Penguins' lead to 20-19. But from there, three Canisius attack errors and a service ace pushed Youngstown State's lead to 24-19. After the Griffs made the score 24-20 on the power of a kill from Zaucha, the Penguins closed out the evening on a kill by Householder off an assist from setter Isabel Schaefbaur, one of her match-high 44 assists on the night.
