Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Canisius Falls Short in Loss to St. Bonaventure

Despite a late flurry of shots and sophomore Edson Flores' second-half goal, Canisius suffered a 2-1 setback to Little Three rival St. Bonaventure Thursday in men's intercollegiate soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Bonnies moved to 1-2-0 as they claimed their first win of the season. The Golden Griffins slid to 0-3-0 in non-conference play with the setback.

The teams began the game at a frenetic pace, with the Griffs putting up 10 shots in the first half and the Bonnies attempting nine. Bonnies goalkeeper Nicholas Pucci recorded four saves in the first half and ended the game with six. Griff's goalkeeper, senior Jack Petrie, tallied three saves on the night.

St. Bonaventure was the first to strike as Andres Javitt connected on a header in the seventh minute of the contest. The Bonnies went into the second half up a pair as Luc Finelli scored in the 26th minute.

Canisius looked to even the playing field in the second half, putting up seven shots in the final frame alongside five corner kicks.

The Griffs were rewarded in the 74th minute as Flores found the back of the net to cut the St. Bonaventure lead to one. Junior Kyle Pollard sent a pass to junior Glodie Mata down the sideline, who sent a cross into the box for a surging Flores.

Canisius managed to hold the Bonnies scoreless in the second half, led by the senior Kodie Sarkodie, who made multiple goal-saving plays as a back line defender.

The Griffs pressed for the equalizer following Torres' tally, registering multiple offensive chances in the final 15 minutes of play, but failed to draw level, allowing the Bonnies to secure the one-goal triumph.

Game Notes:
•Flores' goal was the first of his collegiate career
•Sarkodie, Pollard and sophomore AJ Zarcone played the entire 90 minutes. Sarkodie and Zarcone have played all 270 minutes so far this season without exiting the game
•Pollard notched his first assist of the season. He now has three points on the campaign after scoring in the season opener at Le Moyne (Aug. 22)
•The Griffs held a 17-14 shot advantage and lead the Bonnies, 10-9, on corner kicks
•St. Bonaventure leads the all-time series 28-18-9 after tonight's win
