Men’s Soccer Suffers Setback at Duquesne

Duquesne scored twice in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Canisius, 3-1, in men's collegiate soccer action Sunday at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.

With the victory, Duquesne improved to 2-0-0 on the season while the Golden Griffins slipped to 0-2-0 on the young season.

The Dukes took an early lead in the contest as deflected pass found its way to the feet of Jaxon Ervin, who beat Canisius senior keeper Jack Petrie from the middle of the box to give Duquesne a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute.

The Griffs tied the game in the 39th minute as junior Mesafint Ellingson used his speed to catch a Duquesne defender off-guard. Thwarting an attempt to clear the ball, Ellingson blocked the pass in front of the Dukes net and scored an unassisted goal.

In the second half, Duquesne put the momentum back in its favor as Roni Badler scored to give the Duke a 2-1 advantage in the 56th minute.

Ali Nasser closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute with a goal that gave the Dukes a 3-1 lead.

Petrie recorded four saves in his first start in goal of the season. Duke's goalkeeper Zoltan Nagy made four saves to record the win.
