Softball Drops Final Game of the Series to Iona

Iona scored four times in the third and then added three more runs in the fourth en route to a 9-3 win over Canisius in MAAC softball action Sunday afternoon in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Iona's win allowed the Gaels to avoid the series sweep after the Golden Griffins took two games on Saturday. Iona improved to 14-15 overall and 6-4 in league play with the victory, while Canisius fell to 14-15 overall and 9-5 in conference action.

Senior Megan Giese and sophomore Gabi Farris each had two hits in the losing effort, while senior Sydney Costan added a pair of RBI.

Canisius opened the game's scoring in the top-half of the second after Costan ripped a two-run single to right that allowed Ferris and Giese to score. Iona took the lead for good in the third with a four-run frame, and then the Gaels tacked on three more runs to take a 7-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. The Gaels took advantage of four Canisius errors on the day, with two coming in the third inning and the other two occurring in the fourth inning.

Iona pitcher Samantha Rieb earned the win in the circle to improve to 10-8 on the year after she went the distance and fanned four Canisius batters. Rieb allowed all three Canisius runs on seven hits. Canisius starter Kate Wiggins took the loss after she gave up four runs, one earned, on two hits while fanning four in 2.1 innings of work.
