Softball Takes Two From Siena Thanks to Fazzolari's Walk-Off

Senior Gianna Fazzolari's RBI-double with one out in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference, as the Golden Griffins came back from a three-run deficit to earn a 6-5 win over Siena in the second game of a MAAC doubleheader Saturday evening at the Demske Sports Complex.

Fazzolari's walk-off hit secured the doubleheader sweep for the Griffs, as the home team won the day's first game 4-0 thanks to a complete-game, three-hit shutout from senior pitcher Megan Giese. Canisius improved to 16-15 overall and 11-5 in league play with the two wins, while Siena fell to 22-15 overall and 7-6 in conference action.

GAME ONE
Giese, the two-time MAAC Pitcher of the Year, earned her 12th win of the season in the circle after she went the distance and fanned 10 batter, while allowing just three hits and one walk. One of those three hits came in the top-half of the first after Madi Silber doubled. Sibler never advanced past second base, and the Saints did not get another base runner to second base until the top-have of the seventh after Emma Peterson double with one out in the frame.

Giese got all the help she needed in the bottom of the first when senior Christie McGee-Ross led off the frame with a solo homer to give Canisius the 1-0 lead. The Griffs tacked on a second run in the first thanks to an RBI-double from Fazzolari, which allowed junior Alyssa Cloutier to score from second.

In the fourth, an RBI-single by McGee-Ross made the score 3-0 in favor of the home team, and the Blue and Gold tacked on their fourth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Giese helped her own cause with an RBI-double that drove in teammate Morgan Cook.

Canisius recorded eight hits in the game one victory, led by McGee-Ross, who went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Siena starter Alissa Eimont took loss in the circle for the Saints after she gave up four earned runs on eight hits while walking five and striking out four in 6.0 innings of work.

GAME TWO
Trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the third, Canisius battled back and scored the 6-5 win in the nightcap of the twinbill by outscoring Siena 5-2 over the final 3.5 innings of the contest. In the third, Canisius trimmed Siena's lead to 4-3 when two runs scored on two errors in the same sequence.

Junior Rosie Gomez singled to drive in McGee-Ross on the play, and an error by Siena also allowed Cloutier to score from first. Gomez tried to score on that play as well, but she was thrown out at the plate after racing around the bases thanks to the Siena errors. Siena answered with a solo run in the top-half of the fourth to make the score 5-3, which was the score as the game headed into the home-half of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Gomez drew a one-out walk, and junior Emily Ilano followed with a double to give Canisius runners at second and third with one down. After the Saints got the second out of the inning, Cook followed with a double down the right-field line that drove in a pair of runs, knotting the game at 5-5.

Giese came back into the game to pitch in the top of the seventh, and after hitting the lead-off batter, she proceeded to fan three-straight Siena batters to end the frame. In the bottom of the seventh, the Griffs found themselves with runners on first and second off with one out, setting the scene for Fazzolari. The Griffs' catcher drove the 1-2 offering from Siena pitcher Nicole Patille into the gap, driving in McGee-Ross, who raced around from second base to score the game-winning run for the home team.

Giese earned her second win of the day, and her 13th victory of the season in the circle, after she three a hitless seventh inning in relief. Patille took the loss and fell to 7-3 on the year after she allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits in 6.1 innings or work. She fanned eight and walked five as well.

Fazzolari went 2-for-4 with the double in the game two victory, while Gomez drove in three runs for Canisius. McGee-Ross scored three times, highlighted by the game-winning run in the seventh.
