Softball Falls at Penn State

Senior Gianna Fazzolari recorded two RBI, but it was not enough as the Canisius softball team dropped an 8-2 decision to host Penn State Saturday in action at the Penn State Invitational in University Park, Pa.

The Nittany Lions improved to 19-6 on the season with the victory. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, dropped to 5-9.

Penn State struck first in the top of the third inning scoring two runs when Kaitlyn Morrison hit a single to center field to score Jiselle Hernandez. Emily Maddock then tripled to right to plate Morrison.

The Nittany Lions tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth to build a 6-0 cushion, plating the first two runs of the frame on a throwing error before a single from Michela Barbanete and a double by Kaitlyn Morrison accounted for the other two runs of the frame.

The Griffs got on the board in the fifth as Fazzolari ripped a two-out single to right field, bringing home both freshman Ella Johel and sophomore Gabi Farris to trim the deficit to 6-2.

Penn State closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a two-run home run to center field to determine the six-run margin of victory.

Junior Kate Wiggins got the start for the Griffs in the circle and took the loss, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts.

Senior Megan Giese came in for relief of Wiggins in the bottom of the fourth and pitched 2.1 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits, adding three strikeouts.
