Softball Drops the Final Game of the Penn State Invitational to Lehigh

Lehigh recorded 12 hits and took advantage of four Canisius errors to record an 8-2 victory in intercollegiate softball action Sunday at the Penn State Invitational in University Park, Pa. 

The Mountain Hawks moved to 10-14 with the win. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, slipped to 5-10. 

Brooke Cannon went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to pace the Lehigh lineup while Sydney Parlett and Peyton Sward both finished 2-for-3 with Parlett driving in two runs and Sward plating one.

Senior Sydney Costan was 1-for-2 with a solo home run for Canisius. Sophomore Gabi Farris went 1-for-3 with a RBI while three players - juniors Rosie Gomez and Emily Ilano and sophomore Madysen Burkey - accounted for the other three Griffs hits. 
 
Lehigh struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning, recording the first run of the inning on a double-steal attempt before Rory Dudley hit a two-run homer to left field to give the Mountain Hawks the early cushion. 
 
Canisius got on the board in the top of the third on a run-scoring single from Farris before Costan connected on a solo home run to center field in the top of the fifth to cut Lehigh's lead to one.
 
Lehigh put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the fifth, recording five runs on four hits and two errors to build an 8-2 cushion.
Holly Lovett brought home the first two runs of the frame on a RBI single to the pitcher. A double from the bat of Partlett accounted for the next two runs of the inning while a single up the middle from Sward capped the five-run frame for the Mountain Hawks.
 
Katelyn Young pitched all seven innings for Lehigh, allowing two runs on five hits to earn her sixth win of the season. She struck out eight and did not issue a walk. 

Senior Megan Giese got the start for the Griffs in the circle and took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings. allowing eight unearned runs on nine hits and one walks to go with one strikeout. Junior Kate Wiggins came in for relief of Giese in the bottom of the fifth and pitched 1.1 innings, scattering three hits and two walks.
  
GAME NOTES
• Canisius is now 4-4 all-time against Lehigh. 
Emily Ilano extended her on base streak to four games. 
• Gabi Farris recorded her first RBI of the season with her RBI single in the third inning. 
• Costan hit her first homer of the season and fifth of her career with her solo home run on Sunday. 
 
UP NEXT
Canisius heads to Olean, N.Y. to take on Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch between the Griffs and Bonnies is slated for 2 p.m.
