Softball Earns Split During First Day of Penn State Invitational

Junior Emily Ilano went 3-for-4 with two RBI and senior Megan Giese struck out 14 to help lead Canisius to a 3-2 victory over Cornell in intercollegiate softball action Friday at the Penn State Invitational in University Park, Pa.

In their first game of the day, the Golden Griffins fell to Lehigh by the score of 8-3.

Canisius is now 5-8 on the season, while Lehigh improved to 8-11 with its win over the Griffs. Cornell moved to 2-8 with the loss.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
In its matchup against the Mountain Hawks, Canisius plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning to open the scoring. senior Gianna Fazzolari hit her team-leading third double on the season to right center to score sophomore Gabi Farris before an infield single from Ilano plated Fazzolari to give the Griffs the early lead.

Lehigh cut into the Canisius advantage in the top of the fourth with an RBI double off the bat of Julia Mrochko, but the Griffs answered back in the bottom half of the inning, restoring their two-run lead thanks to doubles from sophomore Dani Ross and senior Sydney Costan.
 
Lehigh tied the game at 3-3  in the top of the fifth on a two-run double from Rory Dudley and took the lead in the sixth on an RBI single from Josie Charles that plated two and a sacrifice fly from Emily Cimino to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-3 lead.

Lehigh put the game out of reach in the seventh as Morochko recorded a her second double of the contest that scored two runs to determine the final five-run margin. 

Junior Kate Wiggins got the start in the circle for Canisius and pitched four innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. Freshman Olivia Manchester relieved Wiggins in the top of the fifth inning and took the loss as she pitch two innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits.

Fazzolari went 3-for-4 with a RBI while Farris and Ilano pitched in two hits apiece. Three players finished with one hit each to account for the Griffs' 10 base hits in the contest. 


GAME TWO RECAP
The contest between Canisius and Cornell saw senior Megan Giese and Maxine McCraw engage in a pitcher's duel that saw the two hurlers scatter eight hits over the first seven innings to send the game to extra innings.  

Using the international tie breaker, Canisius struck first in the top of the eighth when Costan was driven home on a two-out double from Fazzolari. The Griffs continued to threaten and were rewarded when Ilano connected on a double to left-center field, plating two more runs to give Canisius a 3-0 cushion. 

Cornell tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth, using a sacrifice fly and a two-out double off the bat of Emma Antich to score two runs to put the trying run in scoring position. Giese was able to work out of the jam, striking out her 14th batter of the game to end the contest and secure the Griffs' one-run victory. 
 
Giese evened her record at 4-4 on the season as she pitched all eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks. She recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts. 

Ilano was 3-for-4 with two RBI by way of her double in the eighth inning. Fazzolari was 2-for-4 with a RBI while junior Hanna Hagerman accounted for the sixth Canisius base hit in the contest. 

GAME NOTES
• Canisius is now 4-3 all-time against Lehigh, and the Griffs are 11-14 in series history against Cornell.
• The contest against Cornell was the fourth for the Griffs this season to be decided by a single run. Canisius improved to 3-1 in such games this season. 
• Freshman Carrie Sidare made her season debut against Lehigh. She pitched one inning against the Mountain Hawks, allowing one run on one hit and one walk. 
Emily Ilano and Gianna Fazzolari both went a combined 5-8 in the two games.
Megan Giese threw a career-high 154 pitches for a season-high 14 strikeouts. Giese has recorded seven-or-more strikeouts for the fifth time in seven appearances this season. 

UP NEXT
Canisius squares off against the host Nittany Lions in action at the Penn State Invitational on Saturday. Game time is set for 10 a.m.
