Softball Posts Split on Final Day of Charlotte Invitational

The Canisius softball team earned a split of its games during the final day of the Charlotte Invitational on Sunday, defeating Queens in the nightcap by a 7-2 margin after suffering an 8-0 setback to Boston University in its first game of the day.

Canisius moved to 1-3 on the season as it closed out its first weekend of competition in 2024. Boston University remained undefeated as it improved to 10-0 on the campaign while Queens slipped to 3-5.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Terriers opened the scoring in the top half of the first as Kayla Roncin tripled to right field on the second at bat of the contest and scored on the throw.

Canisius threatened to get on the board in the home half of fifth, advancing runners to second and third with one out. BU was able to work out of the jam, however, retiring the next two Griffs batters to end the threat.

BU took control of the contest with a six-run sixth. A pair of Canisius errors allowed the first two runs of the frame to score before Tyseha Williams crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Aimee Metz. Lauren Keleher then homered to center field, to plate the final three runs of the inning and give the Terriers a 7-0 cushion.

Brooke Deppiesse closed out the scoring in the top of the eighth with a triple to right, scoring Caitlin Coker to determine the final eight-run margin.

Senior Megan Giese started in the circle for Canisius and took the loss after she allowed seven runs (two earned) on six hits in 6.0 innings. She struck out seven and walked one before freshman Olivia Manchester took over, who allowed one run on one hit to go with three strikeouts.

Giese, senior Christie Mcgee-Ross and sophomores Bailey Alatorre and Gabi Farris accounted for the four Canisius base hits in the contest.

GAME TWO RECAP
Canisius used the long ball in the first inning of the nightcap to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Senior Gianna Fazzolari accounted for the first three runs of the game on a shot to center field after McGee-Ross singled and junior Alyssa Cloutier walked to give the Golden Griffins the lead in the first.

Junior Hanna Hagerman capped the Griffs' first-inning salvo by recording her first career hit on a two-run homer to left field, scoring Emily Ilano after she singled up the middle to extend the Canisius lead

The Royals responded in the top of the third with a solo home run from Brooke Piper to cut the Griffs lead to four.

A two-out RBI single from junior Rosie Gomez in the fourth restored the Griffs five-run cushion before senior Sydney Costan doubled to left field with two outs in the fifth inning to plate Hagerman and extend Canisius' lead to 7-1.

Queens recorded its second run of the game in the sixth on a RBI single from Abby Carver, but that was as close as the Royals would get as the Griffs were able to convert a double play to end the threat.

Junior Kate Wiggins started in the circle for Canisius and earned the win after she allowed one run, on four hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out four and walked four before being relieved by junior Toria Kover, who allowed no run on two hits. Giese came in to close out the game in the final inning, finishing with one strikeout and two walks.

Fazzolari, Hagerman and junior Emily Ilano all recorded two hits apiece to pace the Canisius lineup in the nightcap. Gomez posted a hit in her only plate appearence as a pinch hitter while Ross, Costan and Madysen Burkey accounted for the other three Canisius hits.
