The Canisius softball team fell suffered an 8-0 setback at the hands of the Queens University of Charlotte Monday in collegiate softball action at The Stick Williams Dream Fields in Charlotte, N.C.
The Golden Griffins drop to 1-4 on the season while the Royals improved to 4-5.
The Royals opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Makala Strickland singled down the right field line to score Abby Carver, who doubled earlier in the inning.
Queens extended its lead in the fourth with Lindsey Derock getting on base due to an error before scoring on Brooke Piper ground out to second.
The Royals tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Juhles Kelly scored on a throwing error to account for the first run of the frame before Kaylee DeJesus crossed the plate on a RBI single from Ashlyn Mickler.
Canisius tried to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth when Madysen Burkey and Christie McGee-Ross both singled to get on base, but Royals pitcher Autumn Courtney was able to retire the next three batters in order to get out of the inning.
Queens ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out grand slam from DeJesus after two walks and a fielder's choice, implementing the mercy rule.
Senior Megan Giese got the start in the circle for the Golden Griffins and took the loss after she allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out three and walked one before Junior Toria Kover took over. Kover surrended four runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning of work.
McGee-Ross, Burkey and senior Gianna Fazzolari accounted for the Griffs' three hits during the contest.

• The Griffs are now 1-1 all time against the Royals
• Giese extended her team lead in strikeouts (15) and is now 20 away from reaching the 500-strikeout milestone for her career
• Sophomore Natalie Quonce made her season debut
• Canisius suffered a mercy-rule loss for the first time since April 2, 2023 against Marist

Canisius returns to action Tuesday for a doubleheader against George Washington. First pitch from the GW Softball Field in Washington, D.C., is slated for noon.
