Charlotte pitcher Lena Elkins threw her second career no-hitter to help lead the host 49ers to a 7-0 win over Canisius Saturday evening in non-conference softball action at Daughtridge Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
The win moved Charlotte to 5-4 on the season, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 0-2.
Elkins, who improved to 2-1 in the circle this season, threw 82 pitches in her 6.0 innings of work, where she fanned eight and walked three Canisius batters. After retiring the first seven batters in order, freshman Ella Johel reached on a fielding error in the top of the third to break up Elkins' attempt for a perfect game. Johel reached base again in the top-half of the sixth after she led off the frame by earning a walk.
Charlotte gave Elkins all the run support she would need in the home-half of the first after Lexi Winters hit a solo homer to left-centerfield to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead. Charlotte added four runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 advantage and then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the scoring. Charlotte collected six hits on the day and was able to take advantage of four Canisius fielding errors.
Junior Kate Wiggins started in the circle for Canisius and took the loss after she allowed five runs, one earned, on five hits in 4.0 innings. She struck out three and walked two before being lifted for junior Toria Kover, who allowed one run on two hits to go with two strikeouts.
