Women's Basketball Falls to Merrimack in MAAC Opener

Despite a 14-point burst from sophomore Shariah Gailes in the first quarter, Merrimack was able to establish control and take a 62-47 victory over Canisius Thursday in MAAC women's basketball action at Hammel Court in North Andover, Mass.

The Warriors triumphed in their inaugural MAAC contest and moved to 1-0 in conference play and 5-5 overall. The Golden Griffins fell to 0-1 in conference play and 1-9 on the season.

Four Merrimack players scored in double-figures, led by Mia Fiore who tallied 16 points, four assists and four steals. She was accompanied by Madison Roman who scored 14 points of her own and nabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Gailes led the way for the Griffs with 16 points in the contest, 14 of which came in the first quarter. Gailes also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Griffs. Graduate student Jaela Johnson chipped in eight points and six steals for Canisius and junior Mariam Sanogo scored eight points and collected four steals.

Canisius started the game off hot, shooting 41.2 percent from the floor and drawing four fouls, allowing them to go 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the opening quarter. Gailes' offensive performance in the quarter gave Canisius a 18-8 lead heading into the second period. 

Merrimack pushed back in the second quarter, going on a 17-6 run to take the lead with 1:21 left in the period. From there, the Warriors dictated the pace, outscoring the Griffs 37-13 between the second and third quarters. Canisius picked up its offense in the final frame but could not overcome the Warriors' lead.

GAME NOTES
• Merrimack took the win over the Griffs in the first meeting between the two programs.
• Johnson's six steals marked a team season-high and the most in a single game effort of her career.
• The Griffs generated a season-high 15 steals in the contest and won the turnover battle, 21-19.
• Freshman guard Corniya Clay recorded the first field goal of her collegiate career, scooping in a buzzer-beating lay-up to end the game.
• Canisius shot their best free-throw percentage of the season, going 8-for-9 (88.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
• Freshman Yasmine Djibril chipped in six points, five rebounds and one assist off the bench.

UP NEXT
The Griffs continue their conference slate this Saturday, traveling to Siena for a 2 p.m. tip-off in Loudonville, N.Y.
