Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Three Ball Lifts Loyola Chicago Over Men’s Basketball

Loyola Chicago guard Sheldon Edwards Jr. scored 18 of his game-high 22 points from behind the 3-point line as the host Ramblers defeated Canisius 72-60 in non-conference men's basketball action at the Gentile Center in Chicago, Ill., Wednesday night.

With the win, Loyola Chicago improved to 9-1 on the year, while the Golden Griffins fell to 0-12 with the loss.

Edwards Jr. scored his 22 points after he went 8-for-15 from the field and 6-for-13 from 3-point range to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Des Watson added 15 points and six assists to the winning effort for the Ramblers, who have now won 23 of their last 25 home games, dating back to the 2022-23 season, and Jalen Quinn chipped in 10 points and six assists as well. For the game, Loyola Chicago shot 47.5 percent from the field, 39.3 percent from 3-point land (11-for-28) and made 3-of-5 tosses from the free-throw line.

For Canisius, senior Tana Kopa and junior Paul McMillan IV each had a team-high 15 points in the loss, while graduate student Jasman Sangha added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Redshirt-sophomore Cam Palesse chipped in eight points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Griffs, who shot 45.3 percent from the floor, 44.4 percent (8-for-18) from behind the 3-point line and made 4-of-6 tries from the charity stripe.

A bucket by Sangha off an assist from sophomore teammate Anthony Benard with 4:40 left in the first half put Canisius down two at 26-24. However, Loyola Chicago took a 36-26 lead into the locker room at halftime after the Ramblers closed the opening stanza riding a 12-2 scoring run that featured four points from Francis Nwaokorie, who finished the night with nine points and eight boards.

Trailing 54-42 with 9:39 left in the game, Canisius used a quick 7-2 scoring surge to get within seven at 56-49 with 7:10 remaining. In that run, the Griffs got back-to-back buckets from Sangha and McMillan IV, and then Palesse hit a corner-three off an assist from Kopa. But that would be as close as the Griffs would get the rest of the way, as Loyola Chicago closed the door on the Blue and Gold's chances with a 16-3 run over the game's next 3:43. Canisius scored the game's final eight points, with four of those points coming from Sangha.

Loyola Chicago out-rebounded Canisius by a 37-25 clip, and the Ramblers outscored the Griffs 36-26 in the paint. Benard recorded a team-high six assists in the loss for the Griffs and he was also credited with a career-high two blocked shots.
