Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Shutout by Air Force Friday

Guy Blessing stopped all 21 shots he faced to pace Air Force in a 2-0 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Friday at the Cadet Ice Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Nick Remissong scored the game-winning goal in the second period while Austin Schwartz added an empty net tally for the Falcons (5-6-0, 2-1-0 AHA), who snapped a three-game losing skid with the win. Clayton Cosentino finished with a pair of assists in the winning effort.

Sophomore Ethan Robertson, the reigning AHA Goalie of the Week, made 28 saves between the pipes for the Golden Griffins (3-7-0, 3-1-0 AHA), who suffered their first league setback.

After playing more than 30 minutes of scoreless hockey, Remissong got Air Force on the board first at the 14:27 mark of the second period when he jammed home a loose puck for his first of the campaign.

Schwartz provided some breathing room with 2:33 left to play in regulation, scoring an empty-net goal to determine the two-goal margin of victory.

Canisius' best scoring chance of the contest came during a five-minute power play opportunity in the second period when junior Oliver Tarr found sophomore Matteo Giampa in the left faceoff circle on a cross-ice feed, but Blessing was able to slide across and get a toe on it to keep the Griffs off the scoreboard.

HEAD COACH TREVOR LARGE POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Playing hard for 20 minutes is never a good recipe for a lot of success. We were good in the third period, but obviously it was too little, too late. We didn't have enough of a push; we got out competed for two periods. So that makes it tough. We had solid goaltending, we were in the game, but we got out competed and that's why we lost.

"It was a disappointing power play in the second. We've had too many of these moments, where the goals are what they are, but the momentum that should come in those moments we were not able to capitalize on and that made it an even a bigger moment in the game. We were not able to get momentum. It seemed like our power play was looking for it to be easy. You must work to get set up. Teams don't just let you set up. There were some good moments with us on the line rush where we started to use our speed, and those things were good. But, if we're dependent on scoring off the rush on a power play, that's going to be a tough way to score. We need to continue to get better on the power play. It's been more down than up so far in the season, but I'm confident the guys will figure it out.

"Ethan's been excellent. He's a quiet personality. He's a quiet goaltender, which is great. It's very calming for a team when you have confidence that your goaltender is going to be there when you need them. He made a big save in the third period to keep it a one-goal game. We had to pull the goalie, and they scored pretty quickly to kind of fizzle any push we can get near the end of the game, but it is great when your goaltender keeps you in a game. (Guy) Blessing great tonight for Air Force. He made some big saves. A little bit of a boring hockey game, but some good goaltending at both ends tonight."
