The Canisius women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw at Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Wednesday at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.
The Golden Griffins moved to 9-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in conference play as it extended its unbeaten streak to nine games. The Saints saw their record shift to 6-6-2 overall and 3-2-2 in MAAC play with the draw.
In a very balanced game, there were a combined five shots on goal in the first half. Senior Madeline Weltin had a shot ricochet off the crossbar in the 29th minute, while senior goaltender Jordan Spencer made a great save on Annie Bagnall with four minutes remaining in the opening half to keep the score deadlocked at zero.
The Griffs turned up the intensity in the second half as it registered four shots on goal, highlighted by a chance from junior Skylar Cornell in the 58th minute, but could not solve Siena keeper Cate Burns. Spencer kept the only Saints shot on target in the second half out of the goal to earn her league-leading eighth shutout of the season.
GAME NOTES
• Wednesday's game served as the 37th contest between Canisius and Siena. The Griffs have played to a draw with the Saints each of the last three seasons.
• The Golden Griffins winning streak ended at eight games, which is the second longest in program history
• The Griffs out-shot the Saints, 13-7, led by a 6-2 shots on goal total.
• Cornell led Canisius with six shot attempts, three of which were on net.
• Spencer is now second all-time in Canisius history for shutouts in a season with eight.
• Senior Sophia Konstantinou extended her consecutive minute streak to 1,890 straight minutes played.
