Women's Soccer Extends Winning Streak With Victory Over Iona

An early goal from Emma Oliphant led Canisius to a 1-0 victory over Iona in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins improved to 9-1-1 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 6-0-0 with their eighth straight victory. The Gaels, meanwhile, fell to 3-7-2 overall and 1-4-0 in MAAC play with the setback.

The Griffs once again got off to a hot start, scoring just 3:51 seconds into the game. A turnover caused by junior Skylar Cornell led to Oliphant dribbling past multiple defenders before defeating Gaels goaltender Kayla Kalbaugh with a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Canisius looked to extend its lead in the first half, led by Oliphant's four shots in the frame, but the score remained 1-0 at the half.

The Griffs had 10 shots in the second half, but the one goal was all the support senior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer needed to record her league-leading seventh shutout of the season.
