Volleyball Falls to Rider in Four Sets

Paige Giehtbrock posted a match-high 19 kills and added 15 digs to lead Rider to a 3-1 (25-10, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21) victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym in Lawrenceville, N.J.
 
The Broncs improved to 4-12 overall and 3-1 in league play with the win. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, slipped to 6-9 on the season and 2-2 in the MAAC. 

Giehtbrook finished with just three errors in 38 total attempts (.421) to highlight a Rider attack that hit .308 for the match.  Kiannisha Santiago chipped in 16 kills while Molly Rhode gave the hosts three players with double-digit kills as she finished with 10. Ryley Frye dished out 33 assists and pitched in 12 digs to record the double double as she was one of four Broncs to reach double figures in that category. 
 
Senior Kara Zaucha notched a team-high 10 kills and sophomore Lauren Hubert chipped in nine for Canisius. Junior Bella Mosquera added seven kills on 13 attempts for a .385 hitting efficiency. Mosquera also led the Griffs with three total blocks. Senior Jillian Hanna led all players with 22 digs. 
 
MATCH RECAP
Giehtbrock posted six kills and a .455 hitting percentage in the opening frame to lead Rider to a 25-10 victory. The Broncos rode a 7-0 stretch to take a 13-5 lead before closing out the set with a 6-1 run to end the frame.
 
Canisius responded in the second set with a 25-22 win to level the match at 1-1. The Griffs went on a 6-1 run early on in the frame to secure a 10-4 lead. A kill from Zaucha later in the frame forced set point, but Rider managed to narrow the margin to just two points before Canisius closed out the set.
 
Rider reclaimed the lead as it posted a 25-19 victory in the third set. Canisius fell behind 7-1 to start the frame before going on a 6-1 run to pull within one. Rider quickly answered with an 11-2 stretch of its own to widen its margin to 21-11 as it cruised the rest of the way to take a 2-1 lead in the match. 
 
The fourth frame saw the Broncs jump out to a 5-1 lead before the Griffs were able to fight back and tie the set at 17-17. Rider scored eight of the last 12 points of the fourth set to close out the match and earn the victory. 
 
MATCH NOTES

Jillian Hanna notched her 1,000 career dig during Saturday's match, reaching the milestone during the second set.

• Canisius still leads the all-time series against the Broncos with a 33-17 mark despite Saturday's setback.  
• Zaucha recorded a double-double for the fourth straight match and the eighth time this season as she also finished with 10 digs on Saturday. 
• Junior Ella Bourque recorded 27 assists on Saturday, giving her 25-or-more assists in each of the Griffs' last four matches.

Canisius wraps up the weekend at Saint Peter's Sunday. The match is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on the Peacocks Digital Network.
