Men’s Soccer Takes Loss at Marist

Marist scored twice in the final minutes of the first half en route to a 4-1 victory over Canisius in men's collegiate soccer action at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins slipped to a 2-7-2 record in their 2024 campaign with a 0-2-1 MAAC record. The Red Foxes improved to 4-6 and 1-1 in conference play with their first MAAC win of the season. 

Both defenses held their own in the first 25 minutes of play with Marist registering the only shot on goal between the two teams. Sophomore goalkeeper Kennan King made two saves in the first half in his second career start for the Griffs.

Richard Morel broke the game open for Marist with a goal in the 28th minute. The Red Foxes went into the break up two scores after Aiden Arber found the net in the 40th minute.

In the second half, Marist added some insurance quickly after Caio Cavaletti scored in the 52nd minute, putting the Red Foxes up 3-0. 

Senior Ely Sidibe managed to break the scoring drought for Canisius in the 70th minute. After receiving a long pass ahead from freshman Gianni Angaran, Sidibe collected the ball in the Marist box, and buried the shot to get Canisius on the board.

The late score was not enough for the Blue and Gold, as Johnathan Salguero capped the night's scoring with a marker in th 87th minute to put Marist 4-1.

Game Notes:
• King recorded the first saves of his collegiate career, making four stops in the contest.
• Marist held a 18-7 shot advantage highlighted by a 8-3 shot on goal margin
• Senior Kodie Sarkodie, sophomore AJ Zarcone, sophomore Alberto Reyes and junior Michael Switala all registered a full 90 minutes of play in today's contest.
• Sophomore Mason Petrucci led the team with two shots. Sidibe and junior Mesafint Ellingson, junior Josh Miller and Sarkodie followed with one shot apiece.

Up Next:
The Griffs return to the Demske Sports Complex next Saturday when they take on Sacred Heart in MAAC play at 3 p.m. following the conclusion of the Canisius women's soccer game.
