Volleyball Slips Against Robert Morris

The Canisius volleyball team fell to Robert Morris, 3-1, in its final match of the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational Saturday in Moon Township, Pa.

With the win, the Colonials evened their season mark at 2-2 while the Griffs fell to 2-4 on the young campaign.

Graduate outside hitter Ella Loussia paced the Griffs with 16 kills and 16 digs for a double-double with her teammates, junior Kara Zaucha and redshirt sophomore Taylor Baldwin, adding in 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior libero Jillian Hanna had a team-high 18 digs while junior setter Avery Dole collected 43 assists. The Griffs recorded total 12 blocks, with four coming from freshman middle blocker Kalia Reisma. As a team, Canisius hit at a clip of .200 (47-19-140).

Rosina Espositio led the match with 18 kills while her teammate, Abby Ryan, added 15 kills of her own. Natalie Stepanovich, tallied 16 digs with Ashleigh Wallin chipping in 29 assists. The Colonials compiled a hitting percentage above. 300, finishing at .314 (65-17-153).

The Colonials used a .371 (17-4-35) hitting percentage to propel themselves to a 25-14 victory in the first set. The Griffs and Colonials would be caught in a back-and-forth affair to begin the second frame, but an 11-4 Robert Morris run saw them leap ahead, 17-10, and force a Griffs timeout. Even with a late 5-1 surge from Canisius, highlighted by a pair of kills from Loussia, the hosts would still emerge victorious, 25-17, and go ahead, 2-0.

With the score tied 17-all in the later stages of the third set, the Colonials would take a 20-18 lead with a 3-1 spurt that forced a Canisius timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Griffs would turn the tide, erupting for a 5-2 run book ended by attack errors from Robert Morris to reclaim the lead, 23-22. After a timeout from the hosts, Canisius would capitalize on consecutive attack errors from Robert Morris to win the set, 25-22, and prevent a straight-set loss.

After a brief back-and-forth to begin the fourth set, Robert Morris would go on separate 5-1 runs to jump ahead, 20-11. Even with a late 5-2 surge from the Blue and Gold, it would not be enough as the Colonials secured the 3-1 victory with a 25-18 win in the fourth frame.
