Canisius Claims Canal Cup for 13th Time

The Canal Cup is returning to Main Street!

With women's outdoor track posting a higher finish than Niagara at the MAAC Track & Field Outdoor Track Championships last weekend, the Golden Griffins have officially secured the 2022-23 Battle of the Bridge championship.

This year's win marks the 13th time in the 17-year history of the Battle of the Bridge competition where Canisius has won the Canal Cup, which is presented annually to the school that wins the all-sports rivalry series between the longtime Western New York rivals.

Before the start of the 2006-07 athletic season, Canisius and Niagara developed an all-sports competition in an effort to enhance the historic rivalry between the Golden Griffins and Purple Eagles.

"It is a great accomplishment to have won the Canal Cup," Canisius SAAC President Carlin Dick said. "This accomplishment is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of all student-athletes that helped bring the Canal Cup back to Main Street!"

Points are awarded to the winner of regular-season contests, except for cross country, golf, swimming and diving and women's outdoor track, which are determined by final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship (MAAC) championship results.

The only points for this year's Battle of the Bridge competition that remain up for grabs are for baseball, which will be claimed by the higher-ranking  team in the conference standings at the conclusion of the regular season.
